SHAPING THE FUTURE OF SOUND

OUR STORY

From its emergence in 2019, THE FUTURE IS SOUND began with a simple but urgent question :

What if music wasn’t just entertainment, but something that shapes how we feel, connect, and experience the world?

The idea emerged from a deep connection to music - not just as something to listen to, but as something that transforms atmosphere, emotion, and human connection.

Over time, it became clear that while music culture continued to evolve, the spaces around it had not - often prioritising consumption over connection, and noise over depth.

THE FUTURE IS SOUND began as a response to that - an exploration of how sound could be experienced differently.

Since then, it has evolved into a London-based platform with a growing global reach - consistently bringing together artists, thinkers, and audiences to explore how music & sound shapes people, places, and the planet, and establishing a new understanding of sound as cultural infrastructure.

LONDON EMERGENCE

London is one of the world’s most influential cultural cities - yet the way we gather around sound is still evolving. THE FUTURE IS SOUND exists to help shape that future - working across venues, formats, and disciplines to explore how sound can transform atmosphere, experience, and human connection within the city. From experimental spaces to leading institutions and large-scale theatres, these moments form a connected cultural footprint - positioning London as a global centre for the future of sound.

THE BARBICAN CENTRE

THE BARBICAN CENTRE is one of Europe’s leading cultural institutions - a contemporary home for art, music, and ideas.

Within this context, THE FUTURE IS SOUND has established a sustained presence - with the Barbican becoming a stable home for its London programme.

Across multiple editions, it has convened artists, thinkers, and audiences within this setting, exploring how sound can extend beyond performance into shared cultural experience.

This ongoing relationship anchors the platform within one of London’s most respected cultural environments - providing a foundation for scale, continuity, and long-term cultural impact.

ALEXANDRA PALACE

ALEXANDRA PALACE THEATRE stands as one of London’s most historic cultural venues - a space shaped by over a century of performance, gathering, and public experience.

Reopened as a working theatre, it carries a distinct energy - where heritage architecture meets contemporary culture at scale.

In 2024, THE FUTURE IS SOUND marked its five-year anniversary within this setting - a moment that brought the London community together celebrating the growth & impact of the platform.

These moments extend the lineage of the venue, positioning sound as a force that shapes atmosphere, perception, and collective experience.

EARTH THEATRE

Since 2022 - THE FUTURE IS SOUND has developed a residency at THE EARTH THEATRE - a historic venue designed for immersive listening and forward-thinking cultural programming.

With its amphitheatre setting and spatial sound system, it became a testing ground for new forms of sonic experience - positioning sound as environment rather than performance.

Programming has included blindfolded spatial listening experiences in complete darkness, rare live pioneering performances and cultural moments including the Tashi Lhunpo Monks of Tibet.

These sessions established a new relationship between artist, audience, and space - laying the foundation for a new kind of live experience.
